Reading Club
Sunday Shorts: A (Somewhat) Silent One Story Reading Club
Online, various Sundays January-June 2026 (Starts 1/11)

What’s better than a great short story? Reading a great short story together! In this class, students will meet once a month to read a past issue of One Story from our archives. The best part? There’s no advance reading! During each session, students will meet on zoom to silently read that month’s chosen story, followed by a brief group discussion. The meeting will end with a conversation with either the author of the issue. Sign up today for six months of reading and community with One Story.

Generative Bootcamp
Write with One Story 2026
Online, January 26-30, Live sessions 7-8pm ET (can also be taken asynchronously)

Start your New Year by getting new work on the page! Join One Story Publisher Maribeth Batcha and One Story authors and editors for a generative fiction boot camp over five evenings in January.  Each night, Maribeth will introduce a One Story author or editor who will lead a live session of a fiction writing exercise designed to help you create a new scene, character, or sketch. This year’s instructors will be Kerry Cullen, Maggie Love, Lena Valencia, Hannah Tinti, and J. L. Zhang. For those who can’t attend live, the exercises and a recording of the writing sessions will be made available online after each class ends

Making the Cut: Using Collage to Inspire Your Writing
Online, April 9,
5-7pm PT/8-10pm ET
The art of collage is one of layering and juxtaposition, of creating something unexpected out of seemingly disparate images. This formula also happens to be a great way to create an exciting and dynamic piece of writing. In Making the Cut, we’ll explore how working within this visual medium can aid us with our written work on the page.

Self-Guided Course
Hit Submit: Sending Your Work to Magazines, Residencies, & Agents

Online, Asynchronous
How do I submit my work to a literary magazine? What goes into an artist statement for a residency or writing workshop? How do I approach an agent? Designed for fiction writers of all levels, this asynchronous class will answer these questions—and more—about how to present your work and yourself to the editors, agents, and selection committees on the other side of the submit button. You’ll leave armed with the skills you need to prepare your work, organize your submissions, and craft great cover letters and artist statements to use in applications to residencies, MFA programs, writing workshops, and beyond.
